Home movies, Harry Herder's track and PVLS

Post by Sandiapaul »

Another movie my dad took. First part is Harry Herder's track in Kalamazoo, MI. At 9:55 its back to the PVLS. I can be seen running my dad's NYC Pacific. That boiler steamer like crazy, it can be seen popping off a lot. Chan Bleil built the boiler. Look for a couple quick shots of a Raritan. Is this Bill Moorewood's original?

Off to work now but I can add some details about the first part later.

Please keep posting these. I love to see the "good old days", which in our hobby are still happening.

A little locomotive with 4 wheels on the track is a lot more fun
than a 1/2 finished one with 16 wheels on the bench!

Not Bill Morewood’s Raritan. Mr. Morewood’s engine was finished back in the 1960’s long before this video was taken.

Still...a great video!

Nice video. I remember some of those guys. Three seconds in is John Pugh on his J1 Hudson. This was a great sounding locomotive. At 0:037 I'm wondering if that is Fred Hanson from South Bend. He built a 4-4-0, then a Pacific and a Hudson. At 0:46 is Lee Wright on his box cab electric. This was the first locomotive I ran by myself. I was maybe 14. Lee took me around the track once looking over my shoulder explaining what to do and sent me on my way. At 1:16 is Harry Herder on his 4-8-4. It's at the Illinois Live Steamers today. 3:30 I don't know the engineer. The train was Bernie Leahy's. The right of way of the Toledo Ann Arbor and North and North Michigan was originally sited past Bernie's property. He lettered his equipment TAA&NM. Bernie is at the throttle at 6:00. 6:13 I'll guess maybe Gordon Atherton? I remember him as a tall man and a good friend of Lee Wright.

I wonder who the young fellow is running that 1" Pacific on the Highline. The film man was fixed on him, maybe from Ohio as well. The Highline track layout is just as it was back then. It had just been rebuilt for 1972 BLS Meet. The track was completely rebuilt and A Golden Spike in 2012, I think ? :? :?

Chan Bleil and his 2 truck Shay are seen quite a few times as well.

Yes Chan and his dad Clyde are in there a bunch. They brought the Shay and their Pacific. All of us Lake Shore members went up there as a group. The chrome or nickle plated 4-4-0, I remember my dad cracking wise with his friends that the owner spent more time polishing it than running it! The Wabash Atlantic was on the cover of Model Railroader in the 70's. A beautiful engine. And yes I'm the youngun running the Pacific, my dad filming.

The Lehigh Valley engine was built by Lew Bullock, went to Sherwood ? and is now owned by Keith Taylor. The Pacific which is shown throughout the video is owned by the son of the builder who just recently joined the NJLS and is shown on their newsletter with the engine. He may be the kid driving the engine.

The Lehigh Valley 2095 sits patiently in my shop. It has gotten a bit too heavy for Ginny and me to load and unload anymore.
I would need some strong young help to move it anymore.

I contacted Fred Motton's son Roy about looking for some PVLS film footage. Since old Fred passed away in 2019 we don't see his son nearly as much.

Fingers crossed.

Keith, is your LV 2095 a standard LE 1" Pacific?
