We have two Westinghouse Cross Compound Air Compressors for sale. These are dummy units and not designed to function but they look great. These are not perfect replicas of the real thing but are very close with only some bosses, ports, a few square plugs, and one or two other things missing (for you rivet counters out there). The largest difference between the prototype and these models is the sheet metal cover on the top set of cylinders. The model looks too good (in my opinion) to hide all the great looking detail under a sheet metal cover. Granted, the compressors were semi-hidden on many of the prototypes when mounted but . . . . (Be happy to email pictures of what the sheet metal covers are supposed to look like if the winning buyer requests it).
The attached pictures are the actual compressors for sale. We cast four sets of these some time ago, kept two, and are selling two. The two best sets of castings are represented here and the other two were mounted on our engine. The castings are silicone bronze and machined nicely. Porosity issues and voids in the castings were filled with solder but please refer to the pictures. The castings are not perfect and have some flaws. (The sets we kept required considerably more filling and filing work but who can tell when painted black).
The fasteners are 3-48 sized t-bolts and 3-48 model nuts. The t-bolts are stainless steel and the nuts are brass. 1-72 brass bolts were used on the very top. (The prototype uses a stud and nut). The gland nuts, plugs, and piston rods are brass. All were made and machined for this project. (I’d suggest not trying to remove them because they are easy to mar. If you do, be sure to use a good quality wrench and go slowly). The piston rods are for looks. Remember, this is not an operating model.
The steam inlet side (right) is drilled and tapped for 1/4-40 MTP (model taper pipe). Approx the 1:30 position. The two air inlet sides (right) are drilled and tapped for 1/16-27 NPT (national pipe thread). Approx the 3:00 and 4:30 position. The air out position (left) is drilled and tapped for a 1/4-40 MTP (model taper pipe). Approx the 7:30 position. The steam out position (left) is drilled and tapped for 1/16-27 (national pipe thread). Approx the 10:30 position. Clock positions assume one is looking straight at the front of the model.
The very top hole is drilled and tapped 6-32 for an eye bolt but this was typically installed on the prototype only when the unit needed to be removed for service or rebuilding. The mounting holes are clearance drilled for a 6-32 fastener. These will bolt right up to your steam engine and are ready to go, just add the plumbing. Note that pump two will require a shim washer on the noted mounting foot depending on your application (see picture).
The compressors have been glass beaded and will readily accept primer and paint. If you want to polish or seal them in their natural state, oil from your skin will transfer and color the metal slightly. Handle appropriately until painted or sealed.
Asking $2000 per compressor. If you want to buy them both, the price will be $3800 total. Pricing reflects the considerable casting costs, fasteners, and lengthy machining time. Shipping is included to the lower 48. If you live in Alaska, Hawaii, or overseas, please email me at ghowesyyz@gmail.com for shipping costs. I live in the Sacramento CA area and will be happy to meet you and/or deliver locally. Payment (if in person) will be in cash. Otherwise, Venmo or Paypal. Will ship within two business days of completed payment. If you have any other questions, please re-read the post. If you still have questions, please email me at ghowesyyz@gmail.com.
