Gasoline electric drive circuit

Post by JohnR »

Several years ago I found a control circuit for a locomotive drive using a gasoline motor to drive an automotive
alternator which in turn powered dc motors to the wheels.
This was linked to an Australian site I think called SMEX which I can not find.
The individual that developed this was using this system on small switcher engines on an
1 1/2 railroad.
Any Help Appreciated on the link or the circuit .

Here’s the link I have for the site. Unfortunately, it appears the site is down with errors, so it can’t be loaded, at least in my browser.

The circuit described at the above site is not complicated—basically adjustable resistance exciting the alternator. As I recall, there seemed to be a lot of trial-and-error involved.

The site is archived on the Wayback Machine. This link works for me.

Colin Edmondson in England uses that drive method on his locomotives. it works fine.
