The orifice is whatever you want it to be. You could simply make one as shown in the diagram or buy a pair of these and drill them to whatever you like.
They come with a .035 diameter orifice hole.

above teamed up with this will get you a good start,, .035 is pretty close to the finished fit size i am using on mine

I threw both in my cart for the next one

Cbrew, they also offer this one. It appears to be the same under a different supplier.

'to each his own' said the old lady as she kissed the cow....

both are most likely made in the same PRC factory...

how does that style of burner compare with the ones for sale on DLS or the locoparts style burners?

Not familiar with the DLS burners. Locoparts burners use rosebuds and are on the tall side not to mention expensive. The advantage of the Locoparts burner is it does not require a mixing chamber like we are discussing.

Thanks all, this has been a very interesting thread so far, lots of useful information on the ever-evolving black art of burners.

A question I have is, could this design be reduced in size, and proportion, for use in smaller scales or smaller fireboxes? A reduction would no doubt involve some experimentation, and I assume there would be a practical limit to how much it could be reduced and still perform in the same way. My guess would be reducing the mixing head would present the most problems and need the most fiddling.

I see no reason why you cannot use it in a smaller scale. The burner can be built in any size. You would need to choose the proper size orifice to fit the application. Mine is only going to be 7" x 9".

I decided to buy one of the Propane mixing chambers and a pair of the Orifices. I think they would work fine for a burner.

Added a few size perspective pics.

GWR

Yes the burner will scale down.

The problem with putting this design in smaller scales is one of real estate regarding where do you put the venturi/ mixing unit?

Most of the smaller locos tend to be tight under the rear mud ring/ drag beam area.

Take odyknuck's unit and make it 1/2 the diameter and think about where you can put it on a smaller loco.

On my 3/4 Hudson I put the burners under the throat pointing back at the fire door. They make a flame that runs clear up over the arch.

Each burner induces the air it needs...they are like large burnz o matic torch tips.

5 of them across the throat of the Hudson makes plenty of heat.

Bill, that's a nice solution for a smaller scale. Sounds similar to how an oil burner works.
