Harold, the paint mask is a low stick adhesive vinyl. Also I use a base coat / clear coat system, with this the base color is applied first obviously, the base paint is a very thin paint layer that itself is pretty much not that tough. That is why you spray a clear coat over it which adds rhe protection. The base coat dries in roughly 30 minutes which is nice when apply multiple colors. The other part with it being thin is that you can apply other colors over the top without sanding the edges from the overspray from the previous coat.
If by chance you were using a paint mask with a single stage, it has the gloss mixed in with the color. You would remove the paint mask once the paint has set but is still soft so that the vinyl will give you a clean edge, you would also use the method with rattle cans.
Hope this helps.

Or you could use a stencil brush.

So timing can be a factor, depending on the route chosen.
Thanks for the response. It helps satisfy my curiosity. I have no such project pending.

I did this PSC 40ft boxcar using Rustoleum "Rusty Metal" Primer as my basecoat. I did a finish coat using Klass Kote satin 2-part epoxy.

2 heavy coats of rustoleum red oxide primer and Miracle graphics. 4 years of use now. Looks much more red in the picture than in person

Nothing over the primer or decals. Stored in a car barn. No issues so far.

Keep us posted with results, lots of good info so far. Im looking to use a red oxide primer of some sort to simulate anti-fouling paint on the bottom of my model steam boat project.

Cheers
