Help identify this locomotive chassis plz…

Post by steamblower »

I recently got this loco chassis/frame from eBay. It is a 2-6-4 configuration and likely a tank loco. It incorporates a jackshaft drive with Stephenson valve gear. Also likely a Forney or Mason-Bogie type. All mechanicals turn freely. It was also listed as 1” narrow gauge to run on 3” wide track. I cannot find any reference on line. The cab is all copper! Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Wow, that is one unique critter you've got there. I hope you can get it running, would be a real treat to see running!

That's an interesting loco.
I wonder what gauge it actually is?

What type of valve gear is that? I have never seen a valve gear that actually uses a real gear! Does it run on air?

is the bull gear on the front axle large enough for this to be a gog locomotive? 3 inch gauge, sure is not one of the own standards. really cool
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

I think for us to help you a little better, it will be helpful to know that you have confirmed the gauge of the wheels. You cited the listing but that could be an assumption. Can you take a measurement and let us know, if you have not done this?

Valve gear is Stephenson.

Gears to the drive wheel is unusual, but not unheard of.

Our tom thumb uses similar crank to gear.

Keeping it clean up under the boiler will be a challenge.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Hi all. Thanks for the comments. To answer some of your questions…
It does run on air…
Distance between flanges is exactly 3”…
It is NOT a cog type loco…
It was listed as 1” scale narrow gauge…
It was apparently to utilize a 4” diameter boiler as that is what is cut out from the front of the cab…
The front and rear trucks are very well constructed. (See attached pic of front truck)
Will post a few more pics when it’s cleaned up a bit more…

What a shame. With so much guidance material in print, and so many clubs around, one wonders how/why it was built to a non-standard gauge. It'll make an interesting display piece anyway.

You can always build a hundred feet of track in your back yard and still have some fun running it.

Looks like it would be pretty easy to re-gauge to 3 1/2”. Being gear driven by the axle your not dealing with any running gear alignment issues.
