Last Breath Of Fire

Post by Steam Engine Dan »

Hi Everyone, here is a real treat for you all that i found last night. for those of you who remember Steve Booth. he was a huge railfan and live steam enthusiast. he wrote the book Master railroad builder seen attached here. he also made several live steam video series called Railroading In The Land Of Giants seen attached here. but before the land of giants series came to being, steve made a rare documentary of the last days of steam on the GTW called The Last Breath Of FIre. this incredible video takes us back to 1960 when steam powered freight and passenger trains were still active on the GTW. when train orders were still written on paper and sent by telegraph and hand signals were still used instead of radios. spend the day with the crew on a freight train and watch them switch cars.

enjoy The Last Breath Of FIre :D :D

What a great little film, thanks for posting the link. Steve Booth is very familiar to me from his many fine articles in Modeltec magazine.

We were just discussing the end of GTW steam yesterday. One of our live steam guys here locally along with a friend or two got written permission from the GTW in 1959 to ride along on some of the last of steam on the GTW. He mentioned riding the 6325 and the 6327 which were both 4-8-4's. The GTW 6325 is still around.

i got to ride behind the 6325 during one of it's excursion trips to morgan run during trainfest 2004. i was also a volunteer on 7.5 scale railroad there too. that was such a great time at trainfest.
