Hip replacement

Post by curtis cutter »

Three days till a new hip. Tired of walker and continual pain.

I am told by the surgeon it will be 4-5 hours from arrival to release. Anyone had any experiences along this line?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I have experience only with a knee replacement and eyeball lens replacements.
I do know that today's hip replacements are amazingly fast to recover, considering the task.
Especially if the surgery is performed by a Sports Medicine specialist!

I just hoping to get back on tractors and stand at a machine without pain soon. :)

My next-door neighbor had a hip replacement when she was 80. She was on her feet in about a week after her surgery and said it was a significant improvement. She’s 92 now, and although not moving as fast, is still getting around okay.

No...she had 3 replacements...one had to be done twice.

I have many friends who have been through it, and all say they wished they had not waited so long to get it done

The only downsides (mother in law excepted), are a few who had cobalt hips and had a nasty reaction to the metal, and in every case had to have it redone in something else.

My neighbor (both hips and both knees replaced) says the worst part of it is the "worry" about the recovery. The last 2 winters he has used his walk-behind snow blower to clear my sidewalk and driveway.

Bill,

I would say 100% that I wish I had not waited this long. I am glad we are through the covid thing as it may have been considered an elective surgery. I was diagnosed with a muscle issue in my leg with no pain whatsoever in my hip. Only after the physical therapist started working the muscle did the PT say he was going to stop and recommended getting another evaluation. That Xray showed what they termed as "Beyond end stage arthritis" in my R hip. The Xray even showed the head of the femur was deteriorated and a groove had been cut into it.
The surgeon was very surprised that I had walked into his office and was not in a wheelchair. I guess pain can be a funny thing that way.

What I am learning is the recovery is very dependent upon my physical condition going into the surgery. Dr thinks due to my physical condition I should recover relatively fast. He expects me to walk out of the surgery center needing only a walker. My wife just rolls her eyes. :)

My brother goes into the same center the following Monday to have work done on his back to, as he terms it, "roto rooter" the inside of a vertebrae. I am surprised both surgeries are out-patient procedures. I wonder what it would have been like 40 years ago.

Gregg:
About 100 miles south of you is one of the best West Coast sports surgery centers, in Vancouver, WA.
My 68-year-old neighbor had his right knee replaced there last year. I visited him on Day 2 and he walked down his front stairs unassisted. Not even a cane! No way I could have done that after my locally performed knee replacement.

Based on our neighborhood replacement experiences, we'll all choose that Sports Medicine facility for future joint replacements.
'Hope yours goes that easily.

Russ,

I hope my experience is equally as positive as your neighbors. This physician is nationally recognized and does instructing on the procedure.
But, we all know the proof is in the pudding...
