I actually communicated with that guy a while back and tried to explain to him that parting out a live steamer was brain-dead.

Yeah, it's obvious he's coming from the small scale world and thinks that any/all parts from this box of bits will interchange with whatever it is that you have. Sort of like a Lionel cast wheel will replace another from the same type of locomotive. He also must think that there are a lot of these things out there too.
