Re: Rail Strike Averted!

In my lifetime the government has never allowed the railroads to strike for very long. They have walked out a few times but, in a day or two the government forced the workers back to their jobs. There is too much money to be lost if the railroads were to stay on strike long.

Re: A Western Maryland GE! (Sort of)

I know some WM railroaders that are spinning in their graves. The WM was an all EMD road after 1954 as far as new locomotives were concerned. The only exception were a couple of Alco S-6 switchers in the mid fifties. They never owned an EMD switcher which I have always found odd. The only GE's they ...

Re: Big Boy!

The 4014 was reported to be under steam outside the shop this week. I would assume the steam test after its annual inspection. At least it will be ready if the trip is rescheduled.

Re: UP 3985 Has A New Owner!

This should be interesting. The possibilities are big and the key is that their seems to be major financial backing in place.

Re: Big Boy!

I guess it does not look good when you are in the middle of explaining to the STB why you cannot move the freight over the railroad but can run a special steam train making no revenue for the company.

Re: The Reading Rambles Are Returning

The railroad has announced that on Tuesday April 26 they will run 2102 on a break in run with a 50 car coal train. It will leave North Reading at 9:00 AM and the destination is Jim Thorpe. If I were not at least 800 miles away I would go to see this. If all goes well this may well be the best steam ...

Re: Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Steam Locomotive Trust

I have to admit I have watched and may have put hands on a couple of small pieces of the firebox and boiler being manufactured. I happened to be in the right place at the right time. It seems to me the main object of building the T-1 is to try and set the official world speed record for a steam loco...

Re: Mark Twain Zephyr

This is an impressive restoration. I can only imagine the work and research it takes to make this train into something again. I wish these guys all the luck in the world with their endeavor. They are moving the bar up for the rest of us.

Re: Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Steam Locomotive Trust

These guys keep trying to change history and say these engines were not really slippery as has been reported many times. They say "the facts do not support that on the production units". As I have told a couple of the guys in this project the facts do support the engines being slippery. I ...

Re: Mark D.

This is terrible news. I never met Mark but through email and PM's I know he is a guy I liked. His stories of working on 261 were always fun to read. I have missed his posting but had no clue he was ill. RIP Mark. As for the other moderator I had no clue there was one. My computer skills are few and...

Re: More Saved From Indiana Transportation Museum Collection

Good news from a situation that should have been handled better by ITM and probably the city and county too. The freight cars will look good with 765 and the F units can at least be a parts source. I have trouble imagining them coming back to life.

Re: C&O 2716 Is Getting New Air Pumps

This is an interesting deal. The 2716 was rebuilt by the Southern around 1980 or so and the pumps rebuilt then. Southern did not run the engine much and neither did the group in Fort Wayne after they acquired 2716. It is hard to imagine the pumps are in that bad of a condition unless there is freeze...

Re: BNSF Is Buying Montana Rail Link

It sounds like some or possibly all of the branches are dormant or at least nearly so. MRL is apparently going to give the counties the opportunity to acquire the lines probably to be used as trails. I was completely unaware MRL has operations in Canada.

Re: The Reading Rambles Are Returning

I am more interested in the return of 2102 than I was 4014. The last time I saw 2102 it was sitting in the Reading shop on the track where they did the finishing touches on the T-1s when they were being built. For a long time in the Eastern US mainline excursions consisted of 759, 2102 and the littl...

Re: Chehalis-Central Railroad & Museum Insurance Woes

Having dealt with shortline insurance for 40 years in one capacity or another I feel there is more behind the scenes than we know. They seem to have had 2 claims on crossing accidents one of which may have been the railroad's fault for not flagging the crossing on a shove move. There may have been c...
