Re: First Picture of 2020

It would be nice to know something about that engine that made you take a photo of it. Even just where it was taken. And I see another locomotive in the background. Obviously these engines are sitting and waiting for work somewhere. But it could be anywhere. Mark D. It is still in the basic Burling...

First Picture o f 2020

West Quincy Missouri, 1 Jan 20. Finding power in BN or Santa Fe colors is becoming increasingly rare around here ....

Attached is a westbound Santa Fe freight at Galesburg Illinois in December 1981. I had just graduated from Navy Boot Camp and of course, I had to make a road trip to Galesburg while on Christmas leave. Armed with my trusty (!) Konica FS1 and a couple rolls of Kodachrome 64, a good friend and I set o...

Re: Best looking Hudsons .... ever

Amen Mark! Sometimes we have to look past our rose colored glasses and see it for what you wrote, in other words, raising the bottom line for their company. Railfans can be a strange bunch ... we will argue the merits of a certain class or wheel arrangment to the death, though! Regards, Burlington J...

Best looking Hudsons .... ever

S4A 4002 is certainly looking good in this photo. I THINK (and that is where I get into trouble) it was taken at La Crosse, but I could be (and usually am) wrong. Stamp on the slide indicates it was taken by Al Chione (my collection), but the date stamped is 1986. Hmmmmm 4002 was rebuilt from S4 300...

Everywhere West

Anybody that knows me knows that I am a dyed in the wool Burlington Route fan. Maybe the name gives it away? My good friend Fitz can personally attest to this ... we met on an excursion pulled by SP 4449 in her American Freedom Train colors. I don't know what was more exciting ... seeing 4449 in her...

A great fallen flag shot

If there was ever a fallen flag shot, this would be it. Two Frisco and one Northern Pacific waycars are at West Quincy Missouri, June 1981.

Okay campers, time to think out of the box. It is time to pick your favorite railroad paint scheme (better than any card game with the family!). Here's the kicker: you CAN'T pick your favorite railroad. For example, I personally think the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy had the best looking locomot...

Re: Old time Barstow

It isn't my picture (I was only 3 years old at the time), but I have made serious road trips in search of steam, to wit: 4,000 miles round trip to Portland (twice) and Amtrak to LA (twice) ... heading to Tampa next year for the annual American Freedom Train Crew reunion. At least that won't be 4,000...

Intermodal Steam

Hop on the way-back machine with me and lets go back to June 1981. I read in a issue of Railfan magazine that the Crab Orchard & Egyptian Railroad was switching trackage in Marion Illinois utilizing steam, no diesels. At the ripe young age of 18, I couldn't believe such a thing could be happenin...

Re: I'm Still Here!

Thanks Mark! She's a coal burner. It was cold as you know what that morning, plus they were pulling a heavy train out of the Durango depot. Didn't slip once. I've purchased cab rides twice ... to watch the engineer and fireman coordinate on departure is a thing of amazement.
