March 24, 2002

18 years ago today on 24 Mar 2002, 4449 headed made the return trip from Bend back to Portland. I spent the night in a room with several of the crew, we had several roll-aways and I think I ended up on the sofa. After a fine meal at a local restaurant, lots of storytelling and general BSing, we all ...

March 23, 2002

18 years ago today on 23 Mar 2002, the day that so many of us had dreamed of finally arrived. 4449 was going to lead a train in her American Freedom Train colors. I could be wrong (and usually I am), but I think this was the first excursion pulled by AFT 4449 since the Amtrak ferry move that brought...

March 22, 2002

18 years ago today on 22 Mar 2002, 4449 backed out of the Brooklyn Roundhouse, looking every bit like the Freedom Train locomotive she was. All of the masking had been removed and I daresay 4449 had not looked this good in a number of years. Heck, I even helped a gentleman clean the tape residue fro...

March 21, 2002

18 years ago today on 21 Mar 2002, the colors of the American Freedom Train made their triumphant return as 4449 backed out of the Brooklyn Roundhouse. Before you holler, there is nothing wrong with the lettering on the tender; they just hadn’t had time to take all of the masking off! In talking to ...

Re: Old Stuff

UP 844 and SLSF 1522 at St Louis Union Station in June 1990. In town for the NRHS Convention, Cotton Belt 819 and N&W 1218 were present as well. Didn't hurt that the building I worked at was literally right next to the tracks in downtown St. Louis!

Re: First Picture of 2020

It would be nice to know something about that engine that made you take a photo of it. Even just where it was taken. And I see another locomotive in the background. Obviously these engines are sitting and waiting for work somewhere. But it could be anywhere. Mark D. It is still in the basic Burling...

First Picture o f 2020

West Quincy Missouri, 1 Jan 20. Finding power in BN or Santa Fe colors is becoming increasingly rare around here ....

Attached is a westbound Santa Fe freight at Galesburg Illinois in December 1981. I had just graduated from Navy Boot Camp and of course, I had to make a road trip to Galesburg while on Christmas leave. Armed with my trusty (!) Konica FS1 and a couple rolls of Kodachrome 64, a good friend and I set o...

Re: Best looking Hudsons .... ever

Amen Mark! Sometimes we have to look past our rose colored glasses and see it for what you wrote, in other words, raising the bottom line for their company. Railfans can be a strange bunch ... we will argue the merits of a certain class or wheel arrangment to the death, though! Regards, Burlington J...

Best looking Hudsons .... ever

S4A 4002 is certainly looking good in this photo. I THINK (and that is where I get into trouble) it was taken at La Crosse, but I could be (and usually am) wrong. Stamp on the slide indicates it was taken by Al Chione (my collection), but the date stamped is 1986. Hmmmmm 4002 was rebuilt from S4 300...

Everywhere West

Anybody that knows me knows that I am a dyed in the wool Burlington Route fan. Maybe the name gives it away? My good friend Fitz can personally attest to this ... we met on an excursion pulled by SP 4449 in her American Freedom Train colors. I don't know what was more exciting ... seeing 4449 in her...

A great fallen flag shot

If there was ever a fallen flag shot, this would be it. Two Frisco and one Northern Pacific waycars are at West Quincy Missouri, June 1981.

Okay campers, time to think out of the box. It is time to pick your favorite railroad paint scheme (better than any card game with the family!). Here's the kicker: you CAN'T pick your favorite railroad. For example, I personally think the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy had the best looking locomot...
