Re: Old Stuff

Friend Kelvin Schultes saw this and suggested I dig out some pics from the Grand Opening of Steamtown, back in 1995. I did not try to find the negatives and have scanned some poor quality prints. Here is Susquehanna 142 after arrival at the site.

Re: Old Stuff

Just to second John's comment that the 700 was one of the best looking 4-8-4s, here is a near side view. I have others that I can't find, but she sure is a handsome locomotive, currently undergoing her 15 year or 1472 inspection, but soon will be operational again at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.

Old Stuff

The site seems to be quiet, and I don't have any new stuff to add, so thought I would start putting "old stuff" taken back when I got out often to fan. This one is from the 2005 NRHS convention in Portland, OR, featuring two stars, 4449 and 700, both of which participated in steam events a...

Re: Best looking Hudsons .... ever

There are more than one Canadian Hudsons which have run within the last several years which could be brought back to life, including the Royal Hudson at BC rails.

Re: Best looking Hudsons .... ever

I wish both had survivors that we could match up to see if that was true. You know what my favorite Hudsons were, of course, and I preferred the NYC J-3 without streamlining. Remember all railroads designed their equipment to suit their routes, and the Central was the "Water Level Route" r...

Re: Everywhere West

John, thanks for reminding me when and how we met. The last stroke that I suffered really wiped out a lot of my memory. I used to be able to remember everyone's names and all kinds of details. Many are now gone. I DID remember that we had met each other somewhere railfanning.

Re: Holiday Challenge

Well, John, you know my favorite color is black on steam locomotives, but if we have to choose a favorite diesel color scheme, as far as I am concerned the Santa Fe warbonnet colors were the best. This photo is not of one of the original E or F units, but the colors are the same. Besides, Red remind...

Re: How Fast?

I have seen several different claims, most of which are unsubstantiated, of speeds over 120 MPH. Back in the days when there were no limits on some segments of railroads, engineers would try to make up "behind schedule" by speeding. Can't come up with a true answer for you.

Re: On the Choo Choo tonight and tomorrow night

Good for you, Mark. It's probably about time Steve let you know how he feels about the job you do. When the engine runs, few riders know of the work the hostler has done to keep the locomotive ready for the engineer and fireman to take over and run it. When in this post, when the engine ran a short ...
