Almost 27 years ago, railfanning

It has been pretty quiet not only here but seemingly everywhere while people try to deal with the covid19. Now our President has tested positive. With all this time to look at stuff we did in the past, I found some of our pics from the New River Train back in October 1993. It was advertised as "...

Re: "Steamtown’s Grand Opening 25 Years Later"

Tony, the experience of the Grand Opening was great. A few problems with which steam engine would lead each excursion were quickly resolved and it was non stop steam. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Re: "Steamtown’s Grand Opening 25 Years Later"

Tony, I can't speak for what it is like today as the only time I attended was at the Grand Opening 25 years ago. I saw something on the net but don't remember where, showing a lot of freight cars in the turntable area and as far as I know none of the steamers are operational except for the switch en...

Re: "Steamtown’s Grand Opening 25 Years Later"

That was a colossal event for those of us who love steam. My wife and I attended and got our first ride behind the 261. More would occur later. Also rode behind the Canadian locomotives. I have been blessed by being able to attend some of these great steam happenings, including this one and many oth...

Re: March 24, 2002

You are bringing back great memories, John. I sure remember the US flags being flown on that return trip. We must have been fairly close together for the Willow Creek runby, as my photos resemble yours. Years later I found the place to get "the" shot with the whole trestle and train, but '...

Re: Amtrak Continues To Play CEO Musical Chairs

Mark, do you think we could convince Steve, Doyle and other steam folks to petition the new guy to reinstate the Amtrak insurance for mainline steam coverage?

Re: Alas, poor Union Pacific 3985

I have seen 844 and 3985 together at two RailFairs in Sacramento, and chased 3985 when it ran up through Oregon with Doyle McCormack at the throttle. Maybe I'll put some pix over on my "Old Stuff" thread.

Re: Took a ride on the Southwest Chief

After my adventure with 4449 in 2009, traveling to Minnesota, I boarded Amrak in the middle of the night to return to Portland, and in the morning woke up to find myself in the midst of a big group of Mennonites. They are great people and I had a wonderful time with all of them including the little ...
