Re: 261 Rolls Once Again

They are making special runs for some group this evening and tomorrow evening. The folks I saw waiting to board late this afternoon at St. Louis Park looked quite well-to-do, so I expect the group in question had the bucks to lease the train.

Re: 261 Pulls Gourmet express on the former Milwaukee Road

In my opinion, there is no way the "not in my backyard" crowd would ever go for crewless trains in the United States. The automated trains in Australia serve mines in a remote region, not a populated one. I seriously doubt crewless trains will become the norm in North America because of th...

Re: The Minnesota Western Bridge Over The Crow

For the lower one, all you have to do is scroll down and click on the "interactive map" on the right of the green box. Does that help?
If you ask me, we need more "trails with rails" than rail trails. The latter have gotten out of hand in my opinion.

Re: The Minnesota Western Bridge Over The Crow

The trail opened sometime in the 1970s if memory serves me right. The Luce is operated in two units, the state portion, and the Three Rivers portion. Here is a map for the state portion: https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/state_trails/luce_line.pdf The Three Rivers portion can be viewed on an intera...

Indiana Transportation Museum Equipment Auction

The final act of the drama at the former Indiana Transportation Museum site in Noblesville, Indiana, has begun (articles are not behind paywalls): http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2019/09/07-indiana-transportation-museum-pieces-go-to-auction-or-scrap http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2019/09/...

Re: The Minnesota Western Bridge Over The Crow

The Luce Line, which began life as the Minnesota Western railroad before being bought by the Minneapolis & St. Louis and then the Chicago & North Western, is indeed a popular rail trail, and yes, the line was abandoned before the trail movement started. Fortunately, the Luce LIne trail came ...

There needs to be a blanket waiver issued to all operating steam locomotives so this thorny Pathetic Tractionless... I mean, Positive Train Controll issue is resolved.

Re: Whatere;d everyone go?

I am still here, but seeing the U.P. 4014 in July left me feeling bored with trains for a bit; that was a first. That was why I have not posted much since, but I did just make one about the Luce Line Watertown (Minnesota) bridge.

The Minnesota Western Bridge Over The Crow

When the Chicago and North Western tore up the Luce Line after abandoning the route in 1970, they did a curious thing when they reached the bridge on the Crow River at Watertown, Minnesota: they left the main span standing but tore out the approach trestles on both sides. The result is this curious ...

I did not have my camera with me. I would have tried if I did, but the roundhouse was kind of hard to photograph.

So Long Shoreham (MN) Roundhouse

The old Soo Line roundhouse and diesel shop at Shoreham Yard in Minneapolis, MN, is, alas, falling to the wrecking ball (article is not behind paywall): http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2019/08/01-former-soo-line-shoreham-roundhouse-diesel-shop-being-demolished I drove near Shoreham last Friday,...
