Re: C&O 1309 Is Back Under Steam At Last!

That thing looks like a brute of a locomotive! But I don't know the wheel arrangement and can't see it in the photo
Can you post some information about this beast?

Re: Merry Christmas

Around here we're be doing the same thing this year as we did last year. That is Suzie and I will have a nice dinner looking at the few packages under the decorated tree and after we'll trade gifts. The one and only difference is that our daughter came home from New York via Florida is here now and ...

Re: 261 Gets New Spool rings soon.

Can it be repaired, or is it too far gone? Sometimes these things can be welded and machined to a point where it can be useful for at least long enough to have been worthwhile to do the repair.
I call It hero repair. It can save some scarce money for the short term.

Re: Why You Do Not Drive Around Crossing Gates

You called me, I couldn't talk at that time - I had something going on. I can tell you what it was, but not here. You can still call back just about any day. Best time would be when the sun goes down because I'll be outside before that. Sun goes down these days is about 5:00 or just a bit toward 6:0...

261 Gets New Spool rings soon.

Not right now, but once the COVID-19 is gone, I'll be taking measurements and once we have those we can have new rings. This will keep blow down.
What that means is this - The 261 WILL be out again in the future.

Re: Canandian Pacific 2816

That's good news considering what's happening in the USA.
I haven't heard about any steam running this past year other than the Union Pacific.
I also think mostly the loss of steam is because of..... you know it for sure; COCID 19

Re: Why You Do Not Drive Around Crossing Gates

You don't want to go around crossing gates because you don't want to die before your time. Those who do so are likely to have a short life span. This is very simple.

Re: Almost 27 years ago, railfanning

It surely is a new world after those Chinese launched that stuff into the atmosphere for all the world to deal with it. It'll be a long time before we can live like we did even just a year ago. I'm not going to the 261 shop partly because of the COVID 19. The former Milwaukee Road locomotive 261 won...

WOW! That thing looks like it just came out from the factory that built it. Where does that thing run? I have no clue.

Re: R.I.P Burlington John

Tragic. Burlington John was a good source for a lot of railroad topics. I never had any correspondence with him, but what he posted was always interesting or at least correct in what he posted. At least his, and everyone who posts here is still available for reading and even adding comments. For now...

Re: Anyone riding steam recently or up coming?

At the 261 shop things are going slowly with the stay bolts because I and another guy only go there on Thursdays, and last week we didn't get a chance to touch the engine. I was instructed to remove a bunch of diesel fuel lines and filters and gauges from a power car that used to be owned by some ci...

Re: Stay Bolts are Crucial

It has to happen. I don't like it because I like shoveling coal. With oil the fireman just sits on his behind and turn a few knobs now and then and call out signals. Whuppee Do. And it still has to be hostled at night because, according to our fearless leader, who got his info from the guys at Union...

Oh, by the way, the Milwaukee Road 261 is going to oil burning sometime after this year. Coal is getting too hard to get.

Stay Bolts are Crucial

Milwaukee Road 261 Is getting yet another stay - bolt inspection, per FRA rules. It's a long and arduous task, but it must be done for two reasons - rules say so, and we don't want to be operating with broken stay bolts that can't be known without an inspection. I sort of wonder if broken stay bolts...
