Re: 4014 to Duluth

After several days of photos that haven't been edited yet, we see the 4014 back in St. Paul heading to Altoona, WI. St Paul Departure.jpg Some amount east of there, we got another photo at Knapp, WI. Some of the locals did some brushcutting here in advance of the move, opening up this beautiful scen...

Re: 4014 to Duluth

After a layover day in St Paul, 4014 headed north to Duluth, over a route that 261 has operated on many times. We'll begin with the Kettle River bridge near Sandstone. Sandstone.jpg North of Sandstone, we decided to avoid the service stop at Bruno by running up the interstate to Superior and backtra...

Re: 4014 to Duluth

After an overnight layover in Mason City, IA, Day 3 began just north of town. The Iowa Northern had their set of Rock Island Es out for viewing. I've also included a shot from the previous evening as a torrential line of storms gave way to some spectacular storm light. Rock Island Es at Manly.jpg Ma...

4014 to Duluth

With the announcement that UP 4014 was making a trip to perhaps the least likely place one would expect to see it, plans were set in motion to follow the thing. One other benefit was that most of the days would have decent amounts of mileage with minimal layover stops. We started out on the outskirt...

Re: Skookum in California

It's at Niles Canyon at the moment, which is something like 6-7 miles of track. That is just for this summer, however. As best as anyone knows right now, after this season, she will be transported to the owner's Roots of Motive Power Museum in Willits, CA---which has a very small loop of track, but ...

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

It's a different eccentric from the one that was giving them problems in October. They think it's a lubrication issue. The lubricator is a one off that they decided to rebuild during the restoration. The design is a bit...odd.

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

SUPER GREAT PHOTO'S !!! They all look like Skookum is back in the 1930's. Were you able to get a ride too? I've been following that engine that overall has been shot with nothing but luck, other than that one little incident where the track rolled out and the old girl couldn't hold on. Mark D. Nega...

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

the final day of the charter featured the Skookum back in action, and perhaps the best weather of all of the days.

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

A mechanical issue sidelined the Skookum for the first day of the 2nd charter, so we "made do" with Polson 2. No complaints from the crowd, mind you. Such a beautiful engine.

Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

It's been a while, but early March found two sold-out 2-day charters with Columbia River Belt Line 2-4-4-2 #7, the Skookum, at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. Here's a bit from Charter 1.

Re: Skookum is operational

The whole story about that engine is simply fascinating. Talk about something that has fallen on bad luck and nobody cares and it lies on its side in weeds and water for decades and then someone comes along and offers help in the way of moving the entire engine out of the elements. But yet, it is d...
