a 4000 of a different sort.

Came across this L.A. wood carver some time ago on TV who carved 4002 out a solid block of wood
with no power tools. Kinda neat?

Re: Not Much Railroading Going On These Days

Guys, I know steam is the thing, but, with steam staying home the rest of the year diesel's are the next best thing. UP runs north and south through town in the evenings and wee hours. Horn blowing banned by irate residents which is O.K. At a nearby town BNSF runs west to the Port of Long Beach and ...

Steve Lee and 4014.

Guys,
A number of years ago Steve Lee was sort of negative on restoring a 4000 saying it wasn't in the cards.
I wonder if he drops by the steam shop occasionally these days to admire what's going on?

Guys,
Since water towers no longer exist how will they supply water for 4014's journey West and return?.

Recent Amtrak/CSX tradegy in South Carolina

On CBS 60 Minutes the conductor was lamenting his firing by CSX. The engineer was fired too.
The conductor said it was the responsibility of the engineer to re-align the switch and he was
assured this was done. Aside from PTC shouldn't this have been prevented somehow?

Explosive packets

Guys,
A friend from Mexico tells me rail personnel in Mexico place thin explosive packets on rails
that explode on wheel contact. Anyone ever hear of this practice? For what purpose?

Re: Amtrak

Guys, Thanks for your posts about Amtrak and the Empire Builder. I've ridden the Empire Builder three times from Portland to Whitefish, Montana (visit daughter) without a hitch. I've read about not keeping schedules due to your remarks about freight traffic and such. Every time I book the train I'm ...

Guys,
The Nevada Northern Railway out of Ely, Nevada offers a hands on throttle experience
controlling a steam locomotive running on their mainline. Might be a neat experience.
But I suspect some of you have already done something similar?
