Re: Save the L & A 503 steam locomotive on GoFundMe page

I just read on Altamont Press where the 503's owners have now increased the price another $10,000.

Re: The Blue Goose

Mark, number 3460. Santa Fe got 5 of the class from Baldwin, but 3460 was the only one streamlined. They had 84 inch drivers (fast) and weighed over 420,000 lb. Other than that I don't know anything about their use or history.

Re: Cab Ride Milw 261

I have a VHS version of Goodheart's "261, A New River Adventure," which features that trip, including cab shots of Rich and his fighting the wet, slippery rails. I'm sure the fireman really had his hands full.

Re: Cab Ride Milw 261

A product of the infamous Len Shaner. I see he did not spell Steve's last name correctly. The camera work looks too good to be his, as well. Posted in 2008, but I'll bet it was filmed during the winter 261 spent back in Steamtown.

Re: Florida, Stupid People and Trains that go Fast

"The gates may not provide enough warning"----they are not a warning, they are blocking idiots like this guy from proceeding onto the tracks where a train is obviously approaching, and at 79 MPH. I doubt we will ever see an end to this stupidity. He's a definite candidate for the Darwin aw...

Just out of curiosity, how was the throttle reduced on steam years ago with ATS (Automatic Train Stop) equipment?

old bossy
It was in July. Pic attached. A lot is going on there. An operable 2-8-2 just arrived from the midwest, not sure if it's labeled Polson or not, plus the Skookum, a rare 2-4-4-2 is nearing completion of its restoration.

Re: Best of 2017 Wrap-Up

You certainly covered a lot of steam operations this year, Kevin, and I for one thank you for sharing all of them with us. I only got out once this year and then the steam loco we (Bill K and I) went to ride was undergoing a boiler wash that day. Such is the luck of railfanning. ORcoastscenic15sm.jpg

Re: Trains Without Crews

I'm going to WAY off in a prediction here. The thread is about no crews, and I will speculate, as hundreds of others have done concerning possible causes for the derailment in Washington. Since it was a "first" on that line, there were many "dignitaries" aboard. I wonder how many...

Re: SPUD

Ooooo, bummer. Sorry to hear that story, Mark and am glad your wife is OK. STS not so good, eh? I don't like all of that electronic stuff on these newer cars. Designers think that the car should think for us drivers, and it never works right. Can hardly wait till they force us to use driverless ones.

Thanks for posting your results, Kevin. Sure would have liked to seen that triple header. You don't miss much steam operating in the east, do you.

You certainly made that a worthwhile trip, visiting both of the CO narrow gauges. Wish I could do that. I will enjoy the experience through your photos, John.
