Re: Watch out along the rivers!

261 has been on this line also. 2004 for Grand Excursion, 2005 for Kansas City, and 2006 for the QJ trip. I remember a lot of it being right on the river. I believe this to be some Milwaukee Road trackage. There was another washout earlier this year just south of here. I found a link to a news story...

Re: Hostling During The Photo Special

Maybe I'll do an overnight with you sometime. I would have stuck around a little longer on Saturday, but that wind was wicked and I didn't even think to bring a jacket with me. Plus, I knew we'd be at the shop late on Sunday getting things put away. I don't think we locked up until after 11:00. Then...

Re: Conversion of passenger cars to Amtrak compatible

Don has it pretty much covered here. One of main things is the wire that runs the length of the car. This wire is 4/0 gauge, and each car essentially needs 12 lengths of it. There is a junction box somewhere near the middle of the run where everything comes together and feeds the electric locker. Wh...

Re: Milw 261 Form 4 Work

Did I remember reading somewhere that 261's boiler was good "on the clock" 'till sometime in September? If that's the case, it would likely just mean an earlier and longer winter lay-up, with a little extra work at that time.

Re: The day before...

Hope they're not going to move too soon-There is a ladder leaning on one of the coaches, with someone on the roof also.

5 years later I would learn of 261. And this guy they call Mark D.

Re: Big Steam DVD out

261 is fired by stoker. It is occasionally required to shovel some coal to fill in areas that are either thin, or where the stoker can't shoot coal to, like the back corners of the firebox and just in front of the pot. You'll usually see 2 people in the cab tending the fire, 1 in the seat, and 1 wit...

Re: C.P. 2816 on the way?

Heard #7 rumble past the house about 20 minutes ago. That would put them almost an hour late, which I think is pretty good, considering that there would almost have to be slow orders out there still.

Just heard from Jeff. He doesn't go that way anymore, but left the shop at about 5:30.

Re: Bridge collapses in Minneapolis, on train

Only Tim and I signed into the book today. Tim left at 11:30 and I left a little after 6:00. I don't think Jim F. was in today. Joe C's at home and I have a message for Jeff M. to call me. I don't think he was there today though. Haven't heard from Steve, but I don't think he uses that bridge. I was...

Re: Bridge collapses in Minneapolis, on train

This bridge is probably 2 miles from the 261 shop, which is where I was at the time. As I was leaving the shop, passing over 35W, I heard kind of a non-chalant traffic report about a bridge collapse. I didn't see traffic building up, so it must have just happened. Now, to make matters worse, there i...

Re: 261 at speed

Couldn't tell you where that one was taken, but on that date were likely on the BNSF Wayzata Sub somewhere between Mpls. Jct and Howard Lake. Looks like Al was standing in the vestibule of our coach #203, if I remember the consist correctly. I think the "bus generator" coach #202 is just a...
