Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

Minneapolis and St. Paul population is made up of people who are mostly train and especially railroading itself, illiterate. They mostly won't be in line waiting to see it close up. There will be some people, as you know, but I'm pretty sure you could get up close and intimate. Take lots of photo's ...

Re: Norfolk Southern Wreck (video)

Good video. By the way, no need to apologize about not being steam - There is no rule in this forum that it has to be steam related. It is all railroad. Hand Cars, electric's, AMTRAK, anything goes. It has always been that way and it's only happenstance that it is mostly steam related. Mark D.

Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

You might want to hire the Goodyear blimp and hover over it for a while. That's probably the only way to get within a mile of it. In truth, this is Minnesota, land of people who don't even know what a train is. You shouldn't have a problem, especially if you get there during the hours when most peop...

Re: Ancient Diesel Arrived Twin Cities Yesterday

I got an inside look at that ancient diesel that now takes up storage space in the yard yesterday. What a mess! It's infested with rust and dirt and pealing paint everywhere inside. Looks great from the outside. It has electrical issues that cause the battery that starts the GM 8V-XX (I forget the c...

Re: Ancient Diesel Arrived Twin Cities Yesterday

I just found out the real reason we haven't operated Milw. 261 only on the TC&W for the past few years. Had nothing at all to do with PTC. PTC is still not mandatory. It's all about insurance. When we were running to places like Duluth, Milwaukee, Chicago etc. it was with Amtrak insurance. And w...

Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

I seriously doubt it will be running along the North Shore. Maybe, but I think they will park it near or at the museum - former Duluth depot. It's going to be very interesting when they try to wye the thing. Probably at the same place as 261 has had to wye and always got through it without having to...

Re: Ancient Diesel Arrived Twin Cities Yesterday

The only thing I can see that might help out the Friends of 261 would be if it were able to be converted to PTC. But I don't see that happening. If it were able to be converted, and I'm not sure that it can be, then what's the point of the 261 operating trips? Might as well send it over to Jackson S...

Ancient Diesel Arrived Twin Cities Yesterday

The covered wagon with a diesel engine inside arrived in tow at SPUD yesterday, 5/30/19. Too bad it doesn't run. Batteries are dead. I didn't go over there so I don't know anything more. I also don't know where it will go once they get it to run. Meanwhile I was at the 261 shop helping to replace a ...

At the 261 Shop Today

Not sure if the engine will be ready for our trips this spring. We're trying, but it's slow going. However, that diesel Steve bought should show up in town within a week or so. The steam team from Union Pacific were to stop at our shop today, they're driving from Wyoming or wherever they come from. ...

Maybe so. If so, that's a good idea. It will operate on other rails for which those operations will generate revenue.

Re: After Big Boy Back to Normal for Steam

1) it's just another diesel engine to me. I didn't know it was going to be in the consist, I have yet to see it on the 261 / BNSF property. Maybe tomorrow, because I promised Steve I'd be there to do something on the steam engine. 2) speaking of steam engines, I read somewhere that it will be going ...

After Big Boy Back to Normal for Steam

Well, all the hoopla with the Union Pacific Rwy. is pretty much over now. Back to the regular grind I guess. I'll be at the 261 shop this Thursday trying to help out in the firebox that needs a few tweaks. And this spring sometime (I forget when) it will be heading west again on the TC&W at abou...

Re: 4014 Derailment Article

Having seen things like that with the 261 over the years I'm not surprised. One thing that can cause this would be the sharper curves installed during the many years of diesel power in order to add more storage tracks or other reasons for more trackage in yards. That's why steam people usually carry...
