Re: Locomotive that was Restored, but Never Run, Part II

It should be moved to a railroad museum that could take it in. Nobody's going to restore it and put it back in service. I would wish otherwise, but that's how it is.

Re: Southwest LRT Construction Has Begun

That is the biggest boondoggle to ever come to the Twin Cities and the western suburbs. It will never turn a profit, so it will have to be subsidized by tax dollars most likely taken from the people of the suburbs that the train runs through. Worse yet, it might cause our illustrious (NOT) to ad mor...

Re: Thread for 4014 Videos - First Runs and Trip to Ogden

I'm just happy to see that things are going well for Ed Dickens. The way he was treated by certain people on another railroad forum was totally uncalled for. Ed is a top notch steam locomotive mechanic and a good machinist. I've never met Ed, but I've heard of him and quite a bit of him from people ...

Your observations are quite distinct. It also points out why this time the ceremony won't be where the original was held.

Re: Ceremonial dignitary hoopla at Ogden.

Most likely the big wigs at U.P. want to have a ceremony for the length of time their railroad has been in business with a bunch of back slapping. A time for the top Mr. Bindlestiff's to crow. Maybe before all is done they might make a mention about the guys who put the biggest steam locomotive back...

Re: Thread for 4014 Videos - First Runs and Trip to Ogden

It was the 844 that had the steam leak I witnessed. I'm pretty sure it's the packing on the rear of the engineers side valve. I haven't seen any more recent video's to see if it has worked itself in or they fixed it or it's still leaking.

Re: 150 Years Ago: Ten Miles Of Track Built In One Day

The actual Promontory point lost its track, but there is a place called Promontory on the map and on the U.P. track that crosses the lake. I don't know where the actual point where the two original locomotives touched pilots. It's not on my DeLorme map.

Re: 150 Years Ago: Ten Miles Of Track Built In One Day

John, you put forth a topic that nobody even thinks about today. Good for you for doing so. I cannot recall right now how they did it, but they did take corners. In order to get the rails laid they put down only the bare minimum of spikes. Along with that they also put down the minimum of ties. The ...

Re: Thread for 4014 Videos - First Runs and Trip to Ogden

Truly they are two different things. One is a leak, the other is to blow water out of the cylinder. They sound the same, or at least very similar especially through a video. I ran that video several times and couldn't be sure what it really is... or was. Either way, they'll get there regardless. Mar...

Re: Thread for 4014 Videos - First Runs and Trip to Ogden

The video is short, but sure is good. One thing I noticed is that the 844 seems to have a steam leak on the engineers side. If it's not that, they've got the cylinder cocks are left open, which I doubt.

The last one - Just above this post - is very long, but you are there pacing the train. Pop up some popcorn for this one.

Re: Latest from Cheyenne?

If you find any more of those clips let us know! That first one is great, starting out from I don't know from where, but it's a great short video. It's exactly how it is on any steam engine heading off down the tracks to wherever.
