Amtrak In The Street, 1993

Postby SOO2719 » Sat Nov 23, 2019 8:11 pm

Back in the day, the Monon Railroad ran down Fifth Street in Lafayette, Indiana. CSX and Amtrak continued to operate on the line until 1994, when a reroute took the trains off Fifth Street. Here is a link to a video of Amtrak's Hosier State on Fifth, from 1993:

Those traffic lights sure were tall enough to allow double-deck equipment underneath them! :D

Tony, that video looks like one of mine from back when I video'd trains, walking down the street with the camera on to get to the next position. Did you film that? If it was in '93 does Amtrak still do street running there?

No, the video is not mine (I was only thirteen in 1993, and I did not get out of state much).
A portion of track remains by an old depot located on Fifth, but the trains were rerouted off the street late in 1994.

I watched the video and it looked just like the Empire Builder my wife and I rode out to Washington about 10 years ago. The train looked, to me, to be totally the same as back when that video was taken other than the engine was a generation older than the one that pulled our train. Amazingly, the engine didn't break down!!!
