Old Stuff

Postby Fitz » Fri Jan 17, 2020 6:44 pm

The site seems to be quiet, and I don't have any new stuff to add, so thought I would start putting "old stuff" taken back when I got out often to fan. This one is from the 2005 NRHS convention in Portland, OR, featuring two stars, 4449 and 700, both of which participated in steam events all through the convention, including a doubleheader run to Wishram and back. Great memories.

What railroad did the 700 come from?

Spokane Portland and Seattle Railroad. The 700 is an oil burning copy of a Northern Pacific locomotive. It is also among the best looking 4-8-4's ever built. A photo like this makes me wonder if these two could have ever met during their regular service careers? Being an east coast guy I have never seen either locomotive. I missed 4449 when it was in DC on the Southern excursion and the Freedom Train. Work sure gets in the way of a lot of things.

Just to second John's comment that the 700 was one of the best looking 4-8-4s, here is a near side view. I have others that I can't find, but she sure is a handsome locomotive, currently undergoing her 15 year or 1472 inspection, but soon will be operational again at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.

Friend Kelvin Schultes saw this and suggested I dig out some pics from the Grand Opening of Steamtown, back in 1995. I did not try to find the negatives and have scanned some poor quality prints. Here is Susquehanna 142 after arrival at the site.

Wow, you were at Steamtown's grand opening, Fitz? You're a lucky fella. I did not know Steamtown had moved to Scranton until 1995, a year too late to have asked to go by there on a family trip east in 1994.

Here are a couple more from Steamtown's Grand Opening, 261 and 425, two of the stars of the show.

Great photo's all. It's just too bad that we won't be seeing big steam in action on the high iron anymore because of the change of the CEO at Amtrak. It's sort of a dark ages now and all we can do is look at the photo's from years gone by.

I'll join in. Here's a shot I won first place with. Back at a U of M Model Railroad meetup in the 2000s. My favorite steam locomotive in the whole world. I sure hope the pendulum swings back, and a new Amtrak leader is appointed who is much more supportive of our nations heritage. The 261, and other steam locomotives, should be where they belong. On the main line.
