Water for 4014?

Postby bobnsteam » Thu Apr 04, 2019 7:05 pm

Guys,
Since water towers no longer exist how will they supply water for 4014's journey West and return?.

Water is easy. They can get it at any fire hydrant.

Yep, and that's what any steam locomotive crew does when water is needed. You get permits ahead of time... you do have to plan in advance. Sometimes the city or town lets you have as much as you need for no charge. Other times they put a meter on the hydrant that will be used. Then you get a bill in the mail.

They will doubtless have a "canteen" car or two along as well.

Yes, it's pretty much certain they will carry extra water. Reason is with a steam engine you can never know when you will need more water than you thought you needed and sometimes you can't get the locals to let you use their hydrants. And also sometimes there is no good water source for a long distance. Always best to carry more water than you think you'll need.

UP almost always has their steamers pull canteen cars, especially on long trips.
