I'm just happy to see that things are going well for Ed Dickens. The way he was treated by certain people on another railroad forum was totally uncalled for. Ed is a top notch steam locomotive mechanic and a good machinist.
I've never met Ed, but I've heard of him and quite a bit of him from people who know him well and who have no axe to grind either way.
U.P. picked Ed for a reason. He has creds and has proved his worth long before U.P. picked him up.

I hear that the Big Boy is headed to Iowa sometime in June or July. I wonder if it'll make it up to MN during that time too. I might try to go see it. Or not. I hate going to the Twin Cities even though I was born and raised in the Cities. I only go there now to go to the 261 locomotive shop. But that BIG BOY does attract me.

Yeah, some of the stuff said about him was just plain ridiculous. I did personally question the need to do additional work on 844, but once I saw the stuff that was wrong with her, I was shocked she was allowed to run at all. Previous steam crews really did operate under a "fly by the seat of your pants" type of deal.

That also explains why the Challenger went down so soon after receiving some work. Some of what people are saying is that 3985 is almost in the same condition as 4014 was when they got her. I think it's more likely that she needs a LOT of boiler work and not quite as much mechanical work, but what do I know?

In terms of runby shots, this one is pretty good too!

Pacing video out of Laramie and into Rawlins.

This video, with the sound muted, goes great with the Jackie Wilson tune "Higher And Higher"--well, at least for me. :D Big steam set to good music is very good for your emotional health, my friends.

Yep, I agree. I call it music with a 'stack-talk' feel.

I tried your song, I feel ya. It works well. So I've added it to my list.

I have many classic and modern stack-talk songs I default to when in the mood but the one song I default to (below) is a modern (year 2000) hard rock piece that most people wouldn't even think of.

Just reminds me of machinery and reciprocating mass. In fact it works best if the locomotive's reciprocating mass is visible while watching the video. :P Works really well with almost any 4-8-4 pacing video.

Adding a couple more.

This one is from May's run. Very high quality pacing footage.

This one was posted today. 4014 apparently hauling 21 freight cars.

I saw this neat clip. The fire department in a small Nebraska town puts on a show for the 4014.

4014 leaving Pine Bluff, Wyoming. At 15:30 Ed stops the locomotive, walks out ahead of the train and gives a railfan a talking to.

The story is - he left a camera on the rails. Which would mean he intended to reach in and grab it at the last second. I'm sure Ed was nice and professional to the guy, which may or may not have been what he deserved. :P

Also changed the title of the thread a little to encompass all 2019 runs.

I saw this thread, and wanted to delete my other thread. I found out I can't. Sorry for the multiple posts. My bad.

Here's the 4014 steaming into South St. Paul, MN on July 17th, 2019.

And biking alongside the 4014, I got steam cleaned by some exhaust. No big deal, just a fun memory. Also July 17th, 2019 in South St. Paul, MN.

City of Farmington put out an interesting video which shows Ed and the crew waving the crowd back from the old Rock Island/Milwaukee Road tracks:

I briefly paused in Farmington, but I could not get 25 feet back from the tracks as per Union Pacific's instructions, so that, coupled with a smart aleck railfan who could not hear me when I told him I was autistic as he tried to rib me about not having bib overalls to go with my new engineer cap (ribbing from strangers does not go well with my condition--long story), compelled me to keep going. I did cross the bridge you see in this video. Boy oh boy was that span chockablock with people!

The 4014 from a different, but safe, angle. Many people were waiting on the 7th St bridge in Hudson, Wisconsin. There just wasn't any room for me to shoot a photo, or watch from the side the train was coming from. So I decided to just film the Big Boy as it blasted out from under the bridge, and up from the St. Croix River valley. Listen as the locomotive gets closer and closer, then roars into view. Hudson, Wisconsin July 23rd, 2019.

The 4014 came through my neck of the woods on Saturday, November 10th. That thing is a monster, for sure!
