40 years ago today the last voyage of the Edmund Fitzgerald began. On November 10 she was lost, on Lake Superior.

On a lighter note, if any of you are interested in hearing what the Fitz's horns sounded like, they were actually quite ubiquitous on the great lakes. One surviving lakes steamer has an identical set.

And, Capt. McSorley was known to make the ship he was commanding at any given time to be very hard on ships. He beat them like I beat cars. Difference is that if the car goes down, I can walk on land.
Other skippers who were out in that storm played it safe and took their ships into inlets or bays or any place to get out of that storm. IIRC, no other ships were lost. Yes, some small craft were lost, but (I have the book, but haven't read it for decades) no other lives were lost that night. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
